Luke Wharton

Community Team Leader for CENTRAL COAST

Luke brings a unique mix of creativity, practical life experience and genuine compassion to his role at Flourishing Lives Disability Services. Before entering the disability sector, Luke spent 20 years working as a chef, including five years running his own café. This experience gave him a strong foundation in leadership, communication, problem-solving, patience and supporting others to develop practical skills — strengths he now brings into his work with participants.

After two decades in hospitality, Luke was ready to pursue a career that felt meaningful and rewarding. He entered the disability sector three years ago with a desire to use his existing skills in a new way: helping people build their capacity, develop greater independence and feel more connected to their community. He is currently undertaking his Certificate III in Individual Support to continue developing his knowledge and skills within the sector.

Luke is passionate about improving people's lives by focusing not simply on what someone needs support with, but on what they can learn, achieve and take greater ownership of over time. His approach is grounded in respect, compassion and empowerment, with a strong belief that every person should have genuine choice and control over the direction of their own life.

Building trust is an important part of Luke's approach. He takes the time to listen, encourages open and honest feedback, and works alongside participants rather than making decisions for them. Luke describes this as supporting participants to be "the captain of their own lives" — providing encouragement, guidance and practical support while respecting that the participant remains in control of where they want to go.

Looking to the future, Luke hopes to continue strengthening his skills in capacity building and has a particular interest in specialising in employment training. He is passionate about helping participants recognise their strengths, develop practical and transferable skills, explore meaningful employment opportunities and build greater confidence and independence.

Outside of work, Luke has a creative and adventurous side. He enjoys painting and drawing, getting outdoors for a bushwalk, playing Dungeons & Dragons, and playing heavy metal on the guitar — although, in Luke's own words, "badly!" His diverse interests and down-to-earth personality help him connect with people through shared interests, creativity and a good sense of humour.
